The performance of a variety of Path of Exile items can be enhanced by upgrading the performance of them. They can provide extra damage, AD or even affixes.

Armor

Weapons

The Jeweler can create the highest levels of gems apart from the rare and legendary ones, which you must attain an appropriate level to obtain. Jewels can be replaced with another jewel without damaging the original. However, you can only replace the jewels in a piece of equipment once.

It is typical to use more jewelry to enhance the appearance of. The jewels also improve performance and make a surface harder than steel so that repeated friction from pivots does not cause damage to the movement.

A Glyphmaster can offer glyphs to improve the look of your shields and weapons. These glyphs offer a small boost and can be exchanged, however they are not guaranteed to be available as loot. A good rule of thumb for trinket upgrades is to prioritize BiS (Best item upgrader-in-Slot) items that you won't be replacing soon, followed by any items with desirable stats that are less important than the iLevel of the item being upgraded.
