World of Warcraft Item Upgrades

Upgrades to an item are a way to boost the stats of an item. Depending on the type of upgrade, it can increase an item's Rarity or Mark Level and increase other stats.

The process of upgrading gear in The War Within requires a certain number of Flightstones and Crests and each item has an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the price of the next item by a certain amount.

Item Level

When an item gets upgraded, its stats improve in value. The value is the sum of all of an item's leveled-up perks (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrading items can be expensive, depending on the upgrader and the kind of upgrade you decide to perform. This is because of how many perks must be replaced to allow the item to be upgraded.

It can also be used to enforce gating requirements when queueing for dungeons, raids and scenarios. It is also used to limit the amount of PvP gear players can wear, since PvP is limited at lower levels. Players can view their average item level in their character sheet.

The level of an item will allow players to compare the power of equipment when deciding to purchase or sell. It's a useful indicator of an item's quality and how much damage it's capable of causing. The level of an item can be used to compare items when evaluating the inventory of a seller.

On PC, you can see the level of the item by pressing ALT or using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will display the item's full description, including the ilvl. It can also be located by hovering over an item using the mouse cursor, and then typing /itemlevel into chat.

There are many theories about how the item level is calculated. One theory states that the level of an item is calculated by a formula that calculates how valuable the stats of an item really are. It considers that different perks are valued differently, and that gems found in sockets increase the item's value. This can result in an item's ilvl which is calculated and is usually very close to Blizzard's real item level.

However, this isn't the only factor which affects an item's ilvl, because the level of the area the item dropped in can change the value of its stats, such as by adding an amount to its crit rating or haste rating. Items that drop in higher-level instances will have a higher ilvl.

Item Stats

The item's stats can determine the fate of an item for players. The game uses a variety of them in different ways to encourage players to play with multiple weapons, and to prevent one weapon from being "the most effective." The stat mods of weapons boost base stats. These stat mods are then boosted by a player's level.

Upgrades to an item may boost its stats. The upgrade costs are determined by the rarity of the item. For Item Upgrader instance, a grey or white item will only be upgraded once, whereas items with rare tiers will be upgraded several times with higher prices.

Affixes are another way to change an item's stats. They are stat boosters that can be added by the player to an item. The affixes can do things like give the item additional damage, or give a specific ability to the item level upgrade (such as reviving dead or reducing the duration of cooldowns), or make the item unique by adding an additional name to the item.

At present, all affixes can be modified by selecting them in the upgrade window and pressing the green button with the arrows that circle. This process will cost the player a specific amount of gold and items which can be used to add to the upgrade gauge in the same manner as the other rerolling options.

Players can choose to upgrade an item by a specific stat or reroll the affixes. The range of stats determined by the item's level. However every item upgrader will include at least one stat in that range unless they are an item that is unique, or a God Roll from a boss in a raid.

This is another thing that could be altered by adding the option to upgrade the equipment without rolling the affixes or deciding which stats to enhance. Like base equipment, it would have to be done per item and the interface for item comparison would not display all the possible stats at once.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player increases the chance of finding items, the properties that are generated by loot, and the strength of these properties. It does not, however, directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives players the chance to upgrade their equipment earlier in the game. This is especially beneficial in the early game, since players tend to prioritize weapon scaling and defenses above raw damage gains.

In addition to influencing the discovery of items, Luck also increases the probability of success when upgrading items with the Blacksmith. This isn't to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chances of upgrading that increase with each item level. These can also be enhanced by using anti-materials like the Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.

The shields, armor and weapons come with a default Luck value of 40. These items can then be upgraded with golden ingots, spined leather or oak boards (depending on the material of the item) to grant a further +40 Luck, item upgrader or to increase the luck of an item up to 140.

Moreover some items, like the Hollow weapon, which is infused with Hollow can be outfitted to boost the damage of any damage-dealing skill by five percent. These items are available in the shop or crafted by using the appropriate ingredients.

Item Failure

Upgrades to items are costly and not all upgrades will succeed. Cash shop items can be used to increase the chance of success of an upgrade or to stop players from losing their item in the event that it is not successful.

When you upgrade an item the success rate is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the chance of successfully upgrading the item and can be enhanced by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limits to the extent to which the success rates can be improved, and the overall chance of an upgrade failing cannot exceed 100%.

The success of an upgrade item is also affected by the luck of that item. All items have an initial success rate of 25% and each item with Luck increases that chance by 5percent.

Note that item upgrades are rendered above the inventory items therefore enchantment glints and other effects could be obstructed by them. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
