The performance of a variety of Path of Exile items can be enhanced by upgrading the performance of them. They can provide extra damage, AD or even affixes.
Rare-grade equipment is often superior to the more modernized Common or Magic gear because of their high requirements.
Armor
Armor upgrades are a type of upgrade that can be applied to armor and weapon items. They increase the effectiveness of the item they are connected to. Armor upgrades can be found in the game's world and can be purchased from Blacksmiths at any bonfire. They can also be salvaged by using a professional or higher salvage kits to retrieve upgrade components from items.
The level of an armor's or weapon's upgrade determines the amount of damage it is able to absorb. The ability to absorb damage of an item upgrader of armor will increase as it is upgraded to its maximum upgrade level. But, it's important to be aware that this upgrade will raise its weight, requiring it to be heavier than before.
There are many different kinds of armor upgrades that are available in the game. Each has a different impact. For instance, some upgrades give the armor a certain amount of additional health points, while others make it lighter and stronger. The kind of armor upgrade an item upgrade will receive is indicated by the name of the upgrade, as shown in the table below.
Some of the upgrades also require magic or a combination of technology and magic, as shown by the "Magic" and "Hybrids" entries in the table. Additionally, some upgrades require a fee to use, which are indicated by the "Charges" entry in the table below. These charges are either constantly updated or never expire based on the upgrade.
Iron Ore is the cheapest way to improve your armor. You can find it by exploring and looting small treasure chests. Titanium is more expensive however, it is available through smelters in Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Certain upgrades, like the Reforge or the Hot Potato Books can only be applied on armor pieces of the highest level. These upgrades can give a significant boost in stats, and are definitely worth the cost.
A piece of armor upgraded to its maximum upgrade item level will dramatically boost its defense but the wearer must be aware that increasing its weight can drastically decrease its speed and agility. For this reason, it is not recommended to upgrade the majority of armor pieces that are higher than +9 because the increase in defense is usually not worth the additional weight and power costs of the upgrades needed.
Weapons
Weapon upgrades let players increase the effectiveness of certain aspects of an weapon. For instance, an upgrade may enhance the damage caused by shotgun shells or the accuracy of the sniper rifle. Some weapons also have special upgrades that enhance their inherent characteristics. Frictionless materials (improves stability, and reduces the risk of overheating) and Kinetic coils (increases the projectile's speed for greater damage) are two examples.
The majority of weapon upgrades require the use of a whetblade, or one of the three Power Dices and a different amount of Minerals and Erons. These can be obtained by finishing side quests, killing a certain amount of monsters or bosses or through the Weapon Upgrade NPC in Central Flarine.
Upgrading a Weapon, Equipment Set piece, or Whetblade requires visiting the NPC [Armor] Boboko in Central Flarine and paying her an upgrade price that is based on a specific number of Bars. The more bars you need to complete an upgrade the more expensive the upgrade. The cost of the upgrades will be less if you have more than one of the upgrade materials.
In Chapter 2: Season 5, the ways to upgrade your equipment and weapon sets was a bit different. In the past you could go to an Upgrade Bench and pay for a specific number of Bars to upgrade your equipment or weapon to an increased quality. You could continue doing this until you reached the max upgrade level of the equipment or weapon, following which the upgrades would be reset.
You can still do this but the process is high on RNG and low on agency. Instead, you're much better off going to the stores and purchasing equipment that has low upgrade levels but excellent base scores and stat distributions. These items will have a higher chance of giving you the highest level of benefits and blessings.
To level up quicker, players usually prioritise upgrading their weapons. Additionally, players should consider upgrading the weapons they use with their squadmates to increase their power as well. For instance, Shepard should consider upgrading the M92F to unlock the Beretta M93R, which will make it more useful when accompanied by biotic specialists like Grunt and Tali.
Jewels
Jewels can be used to improve the effectiveness of a skill or provide additional effects in armor and weapons. Jewelry crafting is a method for making them, in which you combine gemstones with specific reagents on a jewelry table. The higher the level of the gem, the better its secondary effect. These reagents can be obtained from Treasure Goblins and World Bosses around the world, or by collecting Legendary Gear. You can also purchase them from The Jeweler in exchange for Scattered Prisms and gold.
The quality of a diamond can be improved upon by the Jeweler in stages that vary from Crude to Royal. Based on the tier of the jewel, it will provide a different stat boosts when it is inserted into weapons, gear and jewelry.
All levels of jewels can be crafted at the Jeweler however, there are some exceptions to this, such as the rare and legendary jewels that require you to be at a high enough level to qualify for them. Jewels can be replaced by another jewel without damaging the original. However you can only swap out one jewel in a piece of equipment only once.
Using more jewels in a move will make it feel smoother and is usually used to enhance the aesthetics of the movement. The jewels also improve performance and make a surface harder than steel so that repeated friction from pivots does not damage them.
In addition to the above upgrades, the player can also obtain glyphs for their weapons and shields from a Glyphmaster. These glyphs offer a small boost in power and can be exchanged, however they're not guaranteed to be available as loot. Glyphs can be upgraded, as jewelry, by visiting the Jeweler for gold and a Scattered Crystal. Glyphs can also be removed and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, such as aegis and traits, aren't swappable and can only be retrieved using an Upgrade Extractor, or by salvaging them using the Black Lion Salvage Kit or an Ascended Salvage Tool.
Trinkets
Trinkets are small pieces of equipment that bestow an array of small but useful benefits to your hero. You can find them in the start-up area as loot or personal story rewards. They are also available through vendors and after doing road interaction. They can be found on the Trading Post, or crafted by jewelers.
The first trinket that a player will unlock is the cloak. It provides a tiny, but useful bonus in movement speed and the ability to escape. Then, they can purchase amulets, rings and necklaces in a similar manner to the way a player acquires armor and weapons. Every piece of equipment has a slot for an upgrade that can be either universal or jewel. Universal upgrades offer smaller bonuses and can be put into any type of equipment, while jewelry cannot be changed or upgraded and is only compatible with certain types of trinkets.
These trinkets can provide additional bonuses and abilities that are active even when the hero isn't fighting. This allows a hero to be more efficient while inactive. It can also make up for the absence of excellent slot in the talent tree or team which are usually filled by a hero's top stats.
A good rule of thumb for trinket upgrades is to prioritize BiS (Best-in-Slot) items that you won't be replacing in the near future, then any items with desirable stats, but less important than the iLevel of the item upgrades being upgraded. This is especially true if an item has multiple stats that you'd like to upgrade as it's often more beneficial to upgrade one important stat than two sub-optimal ones.
Jungle players usually upgrade their yellow trinkets to a red one at the beginning of the game. Mid and top players however will pick a green or a pink ward, depending on the matchup. These choices will have a significant impact on the hero's map control abilities.
Aside from the items listed above, players can also find other trinkets in the game in the form of trophies and awards. They can be earned through completing certain milestones in the story, such as the main quest of a chapter or destroying a boss. They can be viewed by selecting the appropriate achievement in the reward tab of the hero menu.
