1. Roomba Q5 Pro

The Q5 Pro and its sibling, the pricier Q7 Max Series, are among the most powerful robot vacuums we've test. They feature motors that are top of the class and can handle up to 5,500 Pascals. Like other iRobots with premium features (including the most powerful model) they employ smart mapping to create detailed floor plans and eliminate household obstacles such as cords and furniture legs. The robots also have Carpet Boost, a feature which boosts its power when it senses dirt on the carpet.

Both the Q5 and the Q7 Max Series get very excellent scores in our tests on floors that are bare, and they're particularly adept at cleaning pet hair. There are some issues, however, that prevent them from being our first choice. One of the Q5's shortcomings is its navigation system does not feature AI-powered obstacles avoidance. It's thus susceptible to getting stuck on socks and shoes and could not navigate rooms with lots of people well in our tests. It also doesn't have an image sensor that lets it see the corners of a room.

Still, it's very good for those who want to save money on an Roomba from iRobot and have a mostly bare-floor home or office. It's also less effective at mopping, as it relies on disposable wet wipes that don't stay on well and aren't able to handle dried-on debris. The Q5 has a self-emptying cradle, however. If you want to, you can swap the mopping pad for dry ones in just a few just a few seconds.

2. iRobot Roomba X30

In the course of testing, X30 Ultra was the fastest robot vacuum/mop to complete the task of cleaning a whole home with just 66 percent of its battery remaining. It did a decent cleaning job on a variety of rooms and floors with various kinds of flooring, including certain area carpets. Its obstacle detection was top-of-the-line, and it nimbly avoided fake dog socks, turds, Best robot Hoover shoes and cables.

It's a bit more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but offers superior suction and an onboard bin that is automatically empty into the base. This is a feature that we haven't seen before on other robot vacuum/mop combination.

3. IRobot Roomba X40

With an elegant, circular design that looks like a regular Roomba than the competitors' boxy units This robot vacuum and mop combo is one of the most attractive looking models in our reviews. The newest model from iRobot is its most advanced and has advanced features like enhanced dirt detection technology and future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that can autonomously wash mop pads).

It's the only robotic vacuum/mop that scored 100% in our testing due to a mix of high-tech sensors that include cameras, a structured lighting system, and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot in our tests that can completely autonomously refill and empty its base station, and boasts an its own self-cleaning mop pads.

Like other iRobot models like the X40 is easy to use, offering a simple mobile app interface and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Google Assistant. The only real drawback is that it's a noisy unit, which can be a problem if you run it in the morning prior to work or at night as you try to fall asleep.

It's also somewhat expensive, but it's not as expensive as Ecovacs X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 MaxV Ultra, both of which are equally powerful and look better. This is a two-in-one vacuum that is very efficient however, it will cost you more and create more noise.

It also has an attribute known as "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts cleaning frequency for different areas in the home based on how dirty the areas are.

For larger houses it's worth looking for models with zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to instruct the robot to clean a particular area of your house via the app or voice controls. A stairway mode is useful if you own a number of furniture. Additionally a recharge and resume feature that allows your robot autonomous vacuum to continue where it left off is great for busy families.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is a cleaner with more intelligence than you would think from its price. It's a pro at vacuuming, picking up 55% of debris in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses using a single pad and a reciprocating motion that cleans better that most mop cleaners for robots that we've tested. It's also self-sufficient with a fully-featured app, and a self emptying base that is washable.

The well-designed iRobot app guides you through an initial mapping run that gathers information about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you mark on the map. It can be used to design cleaning schedules, or to set up the spot-cleaning. You can also use it to prioritize the most soiled areas for greater efficiency. The app comes with a variety of features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom mapping and advanced cleaning settings.
