The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored very well in our tests of floors with no carpet and are especially adept in removing dog hair. However, they do have several flaws that prevent them from being our top choice. For one, the Q5's navigation system doesn't have AI-powered obstacle avoidance and is therefore prone to become entangled in shoes and socks, and is unable to navigate tight spaces very efficiently in our tests. It also doesn't have an image sensor that lets it see the corners of the room.
It's still a good deal particularly if your home or office has a lot of bare flooring and you're looking to save money. It's also very quiet and operates while you're at work or at school. It lacks the edge-to-edge bare floor vacuuming that is offered in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. And it's less effective at mopping, as it relies on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick on well and aren't able to take on dried-on debris. The Q5 is self-emptying cradle however. If you're required to mop, the mopping pad can be changed for one that is wet in just a few just a few seconds.
2. iRobot Roomba X30
The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive mopping and vacuuming into a sleek, compact package. Its smart cleaning maps and nimble navigation make it easy to clean and effective in tackling larger particles, like pet hair. It also features self-emptying dustbins with powerful suction and support for virtual boundaries. It's the best robot hoover for carpets, although it isn't as efficient as some of its competitors in deep cleaning.
This high-performance vacuum and mops utilizes sensors that help it keep away from obstacles and pet waste. It also learns the patterns of your home over time to ensure cleaner and more efficient cleaning. The app lets you modify zones and alter the cleaning schedule. It comes with a battery life that is similar to other models.
If the X30 Ultra is in a carpeted area, you can tell it to remove and extend its mop. This helps prevent cross contamination. Its flex arm is ideal to get under furniture with low levels and along baseboards. However, it doesn't have the same level of washboard performance as our other Editors' Choice picks, the Ecovacs Deebot Ozmo N8 Pro+ as well as the iRobot Combo j9+.
During tests, X30 Ultra was the fastest robot vacuum/mop to complete the task of cleaning a whole home, with 66 per cent of its battery remaining. It also did an excellent job cleaning a range of floors and rooms that had different flooring types, including certain area rug. Its obstacle detection was great and it stayed clear of fake dog turds and socks, shoes, and bundles of cables.
It's a bit more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, but it has superior suction, an onboard dustbin that automatically empties into its base, and also supports voice commands via Amazon Alexa and best robot Hoover Google Assistant. It even cleans the floor after vacuuming it, something we've not seen on other robot vacuum cleaner best vacuum/mop combinations.
3. IRobot Roomba X40
This robot vacuum and mop combination features a sleek, circular look that looks more like the regular Roomba model than the boxy models of the competitors. It is one of our most attractive looking robot vacuums. The latest model from iRobot is also its smartest. It comes with advanced features like Enhanced Dirt Detection as well as future compatibility (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads autonomously).
It's also the only robot vacuum or mop that scored a perfect 10 out of 10 in our evaluations. This is thanks to the combination of high-tech sensors including a structured light system, a camera and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot we tested that is fully self-refill and empty its base station and boasts an the industry's highest suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop pads.
As with other iRobot models, the X40 is easy to use, offering a simple mobile app interface as well as integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit as well as Google Assistant. The only issue is that it's still quite loud which could be an issue if you use it in the morning before work or in the evening as you try to sleep.
It's also somewhat expensive, although it's not as pricey as Ecovacs X2 Omni or the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra, both of which are similarly capable and better-looking. If you're willing to put up some more volume and a little more cost, this is a very capable two-in-one that should delight most.
iRobot L20 Ultra
The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop with many advanced features to help you forget about your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaning machine, similar to Ecovacs top-of-the-line X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It features a multi-functional dock that can automatically emptys the vacuum's bin and fills up the water tank, and washes and drys the mop pads.
The smart robot utilizes LIDAR and structured lighting to create floor plans and detect obstacles. It is more efficient in its navigation than its competitors with premium features. It also has a camera mounted on the front for real-time hazard detection however, it wasn't 100% foolproof during our tests and was occasionally confused by power cords or other obstructions.
Its vacuum has a suction maximum of 7,000 Pascals, which is more than enough to finish the job. It also has an option known as "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the vacuum's power and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for various areas of the home based on how dirty those areas are.
If you own a larger home, it is worth selecting a model with a the option of cleaning zones or spots. This lets you instruct the robot on which part of your house needs to be cleaned with the help of an app or voice control. If you have a lot of furniture, a stairway mode is also a good option. Finally, a recharge and resume feature that lets your robot automatic vacuum and mop take over exactly where it left off is ideal for busy families.
iRobot RX3
The RX3 is more intelligent than the price suggests. It's a pro at vacuuming, removing 55% of the debris we found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using one pad and a rotating motion that is more efficient than most mop cleaners for robots that we've tried. It's also self-sufficient with a fully-featured application, and a self emptying base that is washable.
The well-designed iRobot application guides you through a mapping run that gathers information about your floorplan and any "no-go" areas you set on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules, set up a spot clean or to prioritize your most filthy rooms to ensure better performance. The app also grants access to many features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom maps, and advanced settings for your cleaning.
Its shape is more rectangular than other robot vacuums, which means it can get to corners and underneath furniture more easily. It is equipped with an impressive 8000 Pascal suction as well as clever combs for removing pet hair. You can also set up a spot clean that thoroughly cleans a particular area.
The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a more sleek and less expensive alternative to iRobot Roomba. It's got a more attractive design, similar to Dolce & Gabbana. The twin cameras are designed like cute eyes. It is capable of vacuuming, but is more prone to be caught by low thresholds and is a bit more noisy than the other top robot vacuums we've tested. It also comes with an app that is less intuitive and a small base station that doesn't double as a bin for emptying.
