Upgrades to items are a frequent and crucial method to enhance the performance of numerous items in Path of Exile. They can provide extra damage, AD or even affixes.

Often times however upgraded Common and Magic gear is often surpassed by Rare-grade equipment due to their higher requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades can be applied to both armor and weapon items. They increase the effectiveness of the item upgrade that they are attached to. Jewels can be substituted with another jewel without damaging the original. However it is only possible to replace one jewel in an equipment piece once.

Using more jewels in the movement can make it feel more comfortable, and is often done for aesthetic reasons. The jewels also improve performance and create a surface harder than steel, so that the repeated friction from pivots do not cause damage to the movement.

A Glyphmaster can provide glyphs that can enhance the look of your shields and weapons. These glyphs offer a small boost in power and can be exchanged, however they are not guaranteed to be available as loot. Glyphs, just like jewelry, can be upgraded at the Jeweler to exchange Scattered Crystals and gold. Glyphs can also be removed and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, such as traits or aegis cannot be swapped, and can only be recovered through an upgrade extractor or salvaging with Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage.

Trinkets

Trinkets can be used to provide your hero with a variety of small, but beneficial benefits. They are available in the start-up area as rewards for personal stories or loot. They can also be obtained from vendors and by completing road interaction. They may also be crafted by jewelers and later found or purchased from the Trading Post.

The first trinkets that a player unlocks will be the cloak, which grants a small but useful bonus to speed of movement and the ability to escape. The player can then collect necklaces, amulets, and rings in a similar manner as they did with weapons and armor.
