Both the Q5 and Q7 Max Series get very good scores in our bare floor tests, and they're particularly adept in removing pet hair. There are some issues however, which prevent them from being our top option. One of the Q5's shortcomings is that its navigation system does not include AI-powered obstacle avoidance. It's thus susceptible to become stuck on socks and shoes, and it couldn't navigate densely packed rooms very well during our tests. It also doesn't come with a camera to look around corners.

It's still a great deal for those whose office or home has a lot of unfinished flooring and you're looking to save some money. It's also extremely quiet and operates when you're at work or in school. It doesn't have the edge-to-edge floor vacuuming feature that's offered by the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective at mopping, using disposable wet wipes, which don't stick on very well and can't handle dried-on debris. The Q5 has an auto-emptying dock, however. And, if you have to, you can switch the mopping pad for dry ones in just a few minutes.

2. iRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact sleek and stylish vacuum cleaner that can also sweep floors. Its intelligent cleaning maps as well as quick navigation make it easy to clean, and effective in dealing with larger particles such as pet hair. It also features a powerful suction and self-emptying bin. It's the most efficient robot hoover for carpets, although it lags behind some competitors in deep cleaning.

This highly efficient mop and vacuum combo utilizes advanced sensors to avoid obstacles and pet waste and it learns your home's layout over time for more efficient cleaning. The app lets you modify zones and alter the cleaning schedule. It has a battery lifespan that is similar to other models.

You can tell the X30 Ultra to remove its mop and extend them when it's in a room with carpet which prevents cross-contamination. Its flex arm is also perfect to get under furniture with low levels and along baseboards. It doesn't perform as well on the washboard as our other Editors' Choice Picks, the Ecovacs Ozmo N8Pro+ and the iRobot Combo j9+.

In the course of testing, X30 Ultra was the most efficient robot vacuum/mop which could complete the task of cleaning a whole home, with 66 per cent of its battery remaining. It did a decent cleaning job on different floors and rooms with different kinds of flooring, including certain area rug. Its obstacle detection was top-notch, and it nimbly avoided fake dog socks, turds, and bundles of cables.

It's a little more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but it has superior suction and an onboard bin that automatically empties into the base. It also supports voice commands through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can even clean the floor after vacuuming this feature, which hasn't been seen in other robotic vacuum/mop combos.

3. iRobot Roomba X40

With an elegant, circular design that looks more like a regular Roomba rather than the boxy units, this robot vacuum and mop combo is among the most attractive looking models in our evaluations. iRobot’s latest flagship model is also its smartest. It comes with advanced features such as enhanced dirt detection and future compatibility (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads autonomously).

It's the only robotic mop or vacuum that scored 100% in our evaluations due to a mix of high-tech sensors, including cameras, a structured lighting system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot hoover and mop we tested that can fully autonomously refill and empty its base station and boasts an the industry's highest suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop pads.

Like other iRobot models as well, the X40 is user-friendly, with an intuitive mobile app interface as well as integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant. The only real drawback is that it's still quite an eerily noisy device which could be problematic if you run it in the morning before work or at night as you attempt to sleep.

It's also a bit costly however, not as expensive as the Ecovacs MaxV Ultra or the Roborock S8 Omni, which are both equally capable and better looking. If you're willing to put up with a little more noise and some extra cost it's a capable two-in-one that should satisfy most people.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is the top-of-the line robot vacuum and mop. It has a range of advanced features that will make you forget about your chores. Like Ecovacs range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-free cleaning machine that takes the care of vacuuming and mopping, with a multi-function dock that automatically empties the vacuum's dustbin, refills its water tank and washes and dry the mop pads.

The smart robot hoover and mop uses LIDAR and structured lighting to draw out floor plans and spot obstacles. It navigates more intelligently than its top competitors. It also comes with a front-mounted camera for real-time detection of hazards but this was not 100% foolproof during our tests and was occasionally confused by power cords or other obstructions.

The vacuum cleaner comes with a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than sufficient to complete the task. It also comes with a feature known as "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts cleaning frequency for different areas in the house depending on how dirty these areas tend to be.

For best robot vacuum bigger homes it's recommended to choose models with spot or zone cleaning modes that allow you to instruct the robot to clean a particular area of your house using the app or voice commands. A stair mode can be useful if you have a large furniture. Additionally, a recharge and resume function that lets your robot vacuum take over exactly where it left off is ideal for busy families.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is more sophisticated than its price would suggest. It is a great job vacuuming, picking up 55% of the debris that was found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops with a single pad that uses a reciprocating motion that does a better job cleaning than the other mop cleaners for robots we've tested. It's also self-sufficient, with a fully-featured app as well as an auto-emptying washable base.

The well-designed iRobot application guides you through a mapping run that gathers information about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you mark on the map. You can use it to make cleaning schedules, set up a spot clean or to prioritise your dirtiest rooms to ensure better performance. The app also grants access to a variety of options, including seasonal suggestions, custom maps and advanced settings for your cleaning.

It also has the ability to reach corners and under furniture more easily because its shape is more rectangular. It also has a strong suction of 8,000 Pascal suction and intelligent combs for pet hair. You can also set up a spot-clean that will thoroughly clean a specific area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a more sleek and less expensive alternative to the iRobot Roomba. It has a more attractive design, similar to Dolce & Gabbana. The twin cameras are shaped like cute eyes. It is excellent at vacuuming, but it's more likely to get stuck on low thresholds. It is also noisier than other top robot vacuums we have tested. It also has a less user-friendly app and a tiny base station that isn't able to double as a bin for emptying.
