WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades provide a guaranteed boost to certain stats. Each upgrade increases the level of an item by +3. A random additional substat is also boosted alongside every upgrade.

Upgraded gear is generally more valuable, unless it has a low requirement by nature (like FB sorc shields) or a high stat variance (like Eth Titan weapons). Upgrades aren't as useful for those with higher variance because of the requirement to roll a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader lets players upgrade their gear by transferring the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of weapon or armor. However, the item used to upgrade will remain in use for a long time and cannot be used again. Upgrades can be applied to Enchantments.

The upgrader can be found in every major city, and can be visited at any time to upgrade your gear. It is recommended to visit the upgrader once every few weeks to keep your equipment up-to-date.

Upgrades can cost more based on the item level, but they will always be less expensive than purchasing new equipment. For example, upgrading a chest piece from Benthic to 385 levels will cost 20 recycle points while buying a similar item from another player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are functional items that can be used to level up weapons tools, armor, and other items. They are purchased by players from item upgrades upgrader NPCs in exchange for various currencies, and can also be found in random treasure lists. Once an upgrade has been purchased, it can be applied to any weapon, tool, or armor with an button, which will show an item's preview when it is upgraded in the event that the player has enough materials.

The cost of upgrading is based on the item upgrader mod slot and current item level, with weapons costing more than gloves or bracers for instance. Each upgrade costs 15 Flightstones plus a specific number of crests. Certain upgrades provide a discount on the Flightstones. Once an item level upgrade is upgraded to a certain amount it is able to be degraded and returned to the upgrader for a lesser amount of the two currency types.

Upgraders for items are available in a variety of locations, including the main island, as well as a few outposts. The NPCs provide an upgrade discount and a chance to acquire a new upgrade recipe. The discount on upgrades increases with the number of items that are being upgraded, and can be boosted by requiring players to complete specific achievements or complete quests.

Unlike Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II there is no item upgrade upgrader available at the start of Icewind Dale. The NPCs that can assist with upgrades are only available through a variety of methods. This is both a positive and an issue.

In Season 3, several new features have been added to the upgrade system. When a player has an upgrade to a certain level of an item level upgrade for a specific armor slot, upgrading other items to that level will cost less even when they are part of another set of gear.

The discount is applicable to all accounts. The amount of Harbinger Crests required for upgrades is also cut and is not available until players reach certain milestones in their achievements.

Crests

When upgrading equipment in WoW players have a few options. Flightstones are an option that is accessible to everyone who wants to upgrade. Crests are more special, and are used during specific item level upgrades. Crests are an essential part of the Dragonflight gear progression system introduced in 10.1, and come in four ranks.

The first thing to remember is that the crests can only be purchased for equipment that is of a certain rank. Each rank has an upgrade path that is different. The simplest and most straightforward upgrade path costs 15 crests, while the most complicated may require as many as 20 crests, based on the kind of gear that is being upgraded.

Players can obtain crests by working through content that is of the appropriate level, which involves walking around and performing outdoor activities to get lower-tier gear, dungeons or raids of all difficulty for items of higher tier, or Mythic+ dungeons or heroic raid bosses to obtain endgame gear. The crests can later be exchanged at an item upgrader NPC, like Cuzolth in Dornogal, or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to obtain the appropriate upgrade paths and steps.

Utilizing these new currencies isn't that difficult, but the system will introduce a few changes to the overall upgrade process. Once a piece of gear attains the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer), it no longer requires Flightstones. This change is designed to allow players to upgrade their equipment to the highest level possible on all their characters, rather than relying solely on seasonal loot.

It's also important to use crests in a wise manner, as they have only one purpose. It is recommended to use your Whelpling-rank Crests on the best gear you can find and keep Drake and Wyrm Crests for the next set of upgrades. This is especially true for items such as trinkets and rings that take up multiple slots. The account-wide discount will only be applicable if all slots on the character are filled with top-quality equipment.
