Item upgrades are a common and crucial method to enhance the performance of a variety of items in Path of Exile. They can cause additional damage, AD or even affixes.

Sometimes, however, upgraded Common and Magic gear is outclassed by Rare-grade gear due to their requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades can be applied to both weapon and armor items. They boost the performance of the item level upgrade they're attached to. Upgrades to armor can be found in the world of games and are available from Blacksmiths on bonfires. Alternatively, they can also be salvaged from items that have upgrade components within them by using an expert or greater salvage kit.

The amount of damage that a piece of armor or weapon will absorb is contingent on the level of its upgrades. The ability to absorb damage of an armor piece will increase when it's upgraded to the highest upgrade level. However, it's important to be aware that this upgrade will increase its weight, which will cause it to be heavier than it was before.

There are several kinds of armor upgrades available in the game, and they all have different effects. For instance, certain upgrades will grant the armor a certain number of health points while others make it stronger and lighter. The type of armor upgrade that an item can get will be identified by the name of the upgrade, as illustrated in the table below.

Some upgrades also feature magic or a mix of technology and magic which is indicated by a "Magic" or "Hybrid" entry in the table below. Some upgrades also require charges in order to be used. They are referred to as "Charges" entries in the table. These charges are either continuously updated or never expire depending on the upgrade.

The cheapest method to upgrade armor is to use Iron Ore, which can be found by exploring the environment and looting small loot chests. Titanium is more expensive, but it can be obtained from smelters located in Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Some upgrades, like the Reforge or the Hot Potato Books can only be applied to high-level armor pieces. These upgrades can give a significant increases in stats and are well worth the cost.

The player must be aware that upgrading a piece to the maximum upgrade level will increase its defense value. However, it can also affect its agility and speed. It is not recommended to upgrade armor past +9. The boost in defense usually isn't worth the weight and power cost of the upgrades.

Weapons

Weapon upgrades allow players to enhance certain aspects of their weapon. Upgrades can boost the accuracy of a rifle or the damage caused by shotgun shells. Certain weapons also come with enhancements that enhance their intrinsic qualities. Frictionless materials (improves stability, minimizes the possibility of overheating) and Kinetic coils (increases the projectile's speed to cause more damage) are two examples.

The majority of upgrades for weapons require a whetblade, one of three Power Dices and a different amount of Minerals and Erons. These can be obtained by doing side quests, or killing a certain amount of monsters or bosses or from the Weapon Upgrade NPC located in Central Flarine.

The process of upgrading a weapon, equipment Set piece, or Whetblade requires visiting the NPC [Armor] Boboko in Central Flarine and paying her an upgrade cost that is based on a specific number of Bars. The more bars you need to complete an upgrade, the more advanced the level. The cost of upgrading will be lower if you have more than one of the relevant upgrade materials.

In Chapter 2: Season 5 the way you upgrade your weapon and sets has changed a bit. Prior to Chapter 2 Season 5 you could upgrade your weapon or equipment by paying a specific amount of Bars. You could do this until the weapon or equipment reached its maximum upgrade level at which point the upgrades would reset.

You can still do this however, the process is high on RNG and low on agency. Instead, you're much better off going to the stores and purchasing equipment with low upgrade levels, but excellent base scores and stat distributions. They will also have a better chance of bringing you the most prestigious bonuses and blessings.

Most players will want to make the most of upgrades to weapons they most often use to make sure they are able to level up faster. Additionally players, they should think about upgrading the weapons favored by their squadmates to make them more powerful as well. Shepard for instance, should upgrade items the M92F in order to unlock the Beretta M93R. This will increase the effectiveness of the weapon when used in conjunction with biotic specialists like Grunt and Tali.

Jewels

Jewels can be used to boost a stat or provide secondary effects on weapons and armor. Jewelry crafting is a method of making them, in which you combine the gemstone with specific reagents on a jewelry table. The higher the grade of the gem, the greater the secondary effect. These reagents can be found around the world through Treasure Goblins, World Bosses and sometimes by salvaging Legendary gear. You can also buy them from The Jeweler in exchange for gold and Scattered Prisms.

The quality of a jewel can be improved upon by the Jeweler in stages that range from Crude to Royal. The stat boosts will vary according to the tier that the jewel is at when it's slotted into jewelry, weapons or other gear.

All kinds of jewels can be made at the Jeweler, with the exception of the rare and legendary gems that require you to be at a high enough level to qualify for the privilege of having them. Jewels can be replaced by another jewel without damaging the original. You can only replace the jewel once within an item upgrader of equipment.

Utilizing more jewels in a move will make it feel smoother and is usually used for aesthetic reasons. The jewels can also enhance performance and create an outer layer that is more durable than steel, so that the repeated friction caused by pivots does not damage them.

In addition to the above-mentioned upgrades additionally, players can obtain glyphs for their weapons and shields from a Glyphmaster. These glyphs offer a small boost and can be freely exchanged, however they're not guaranteed to be available as loot. Glyphs are upgradeable, like jewelry, at the Jeweler for gold, and also a scattered Crystal. Glyphs are also removed, which returns them to the inventory. Other upgrade components, like traits and aegis aren't swappable and can only be retrieved using an Upgrade Extractor, or by salvaging them using the Black Lion Salvage Kit or an Ascended Salvage Tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets can be used to give your character a variety of small, but useful benefits. You can find them in the starting area as loot or as personal story rewards. They are also available from vendors and by the completion of road interactions. They can also be crafted by jewelers and later found or purchased at the Trading Post.

The first trinket that a player will be able to unlock is the cloak. It provides a tiny but valuable boost in speed of movement and the ability to evade. The player can then acquire necklaces, rings, and amulets in a similar fashion to how they acquired weapons and armor. Every piece of equipment has an upgrade slot that can be either universal or jewel. Universal upgrades are smaller and can be used on any piece of equipment. Jewels are not upgradeable or replaced and only work with certain trinkets.

These trinkets provide additional buffs and abilities that are active when the hero isn't engaged in combat. This lets a hero become more efficient even when not in combat. It can also compensate for the absence of good slots in the team or talent tree which would normally be filled by the hero's optimal stats.

As a general rule trinket upgrades should be a priority BiS (Best in Slot) items that you aren't likely to replace soon. Next, any items with desirable stats that are less significant than the iLevel for the item that is to be upgraded. This is particularly true if an item upgrader kit has multiple stats that you'd like to upgrade, as it's usually better to upgrade just one important stat rather than two sub-optimal ones.

Jungle players often upgrade their yellow trinket to a red one prior to the beginning of the game. Mid and top players however they will select a green or a pink ward, based on the game's matchup. These choices will have a significant impact on the hero's ability to control his map.

Apart from the items listed above, players may also find other items in the form of trophies and awards. These can be obtained through completing certain milestones within the story. For instance, finishing the main quest for a chapter or beating an opponent. You can check them out by selecting the achievement in the reward section of the hero's menu.
