The stats of an item can be improved through upgrading it, which is also known as "upping". Each upgrade increment boosts the stat linearly.

Upgrade components

Most weapons can be improved by a prefix such as a rune or an insignia, and others can be upgraded by adding the suffix. These upgrades alter the name of the item and add an adjective, for example "Radiant" or "Minor Vigor. The only exceptions are the non-inscribable weapons, such as shields and foci from Prophecies and Factions campaigns, that cannot be upgraded using any mods in any way.
Glyphs
Glyphs are an effective instrument for communicating visual information. They animate in order to grab the viewer's eye and stimulate curiosity. The animation of glyphs resembles the body language, making them more effective in transmitting an inter-linguistic message. Glyphs can also trigger a feeling of familiarity in the brain, thereby increasing retention of the message.
Each glyph has a set of values that it could enhance a stat, as shown on the item when you open the glyph in the Glyph Storage or when you use them to enchant an artifact. This is the highest value that a glyph could increase a stat's value by, not the amount that it actually improves the stat by. The actual value of the glyph is determined by the tier and the quality of the product you are creating it for.
Most upgrade components slotted into items cannot be replaced or salvaged without dismantling the gear in question, unless it is legendary equipment and upgrades. If you do have a rune or glyph that hasn't yet been applied to your equipment, you can transfer it to a different piece of equipment by using the Upgrade Glyphs context menu in the Glyphs panel. This will create the new Glyph Set with the selected glyph.
You can take out the glyph using a Black Lion Salvage Kit, or an Ascended Salvage tool. The item on which the glyph is located will be destroyed, however the upgraded item can be salvaged by removing the glyph fragments.
The addition of a glyph to an item upgrading may cause it to be unstable, and the shards that are left of that glyph will disappear from your inventory when you remove the item. You can also apply the glyph to your equipment to add an additional benefit. For example, the glyph Deferred Damage can store damage for the wearer and then deal it out slowly rather than all at once. This is helpful for players who are taking lots of damage from their enemies, but do not want to be overwhelmed.
Reroll tokens
Reroll tokens allow players to alter the affixes on their weapons and equipment and they can be obtained in a variety of ways such as in mistery boxes, as a rare drop from skulled creatures, or by killing bosses. Each reroll provides the player with an affix randomly chosen and generally better than the one they had before. Reroll tokens are also a good method to reroll the stats of a weapon, which can be upgraded to increase damage or perks.
Items that have been rerolled will not appear in the item upgrade menu, but they can still receive upgrades. By pressing the "Upgrade item button" you can recycle the recycled items. This will alter the layout of the item's window, and allow up to six items to be chosen for recycling. Recycling an item upgrader mod adds small amount of points to its gauge of level. This amount is determined by the rarity of the item and its level, therefore higher-level items are more valuable to recycle than lower-level ones.

The reroll system has been criticized by players for being too expensive, and it would be more reasonable to let players pay for it in the form of money or food items that allows them to change their build without wasting time and energy. The developers have no plans to introduce paid rerolls at this point in the game's development. They plan to add the ability for players to change their race in the near future.
Leveling
There are a variety of ways to boost the value of an upgrade for an item upgrader kit. The first method of leveling up an upgrade to an item is to increase the amount of upgrade. This increases the value of upgrading any stat. The second is to boost the upgrade effect, which increases the healing or damage of a given stat. If you're lucky, your upgraded item will be at the maximum level of its upgrade track and unlock a bonus effect. This will give you a substantial boost in the upgrade value of the item upgrades. The bonus effect will change with each upgrade level, though. In general, the upgrade effect is increased a value of +3.
The iLevel also changes according to the upgrade path and base level. For example the weapon that has been upgraded from a rare or unique item to a rare or exceptional item is likely to gain the enhanced defense of the new base type of item.
