With an elegant circular design that looks more like a normal Roomba rather than the compact models, this robot vacuum and mop combo is among the most appealing looking in our tests. iRobot’s latest flagship model is also the most intelligent. It comes with advanced features, like enhanced dirt detection and future compatibility (another company’s robot that can wash mop pads in a self-cleaning manner).
It's the only robotic mop or vacuum that scored a perfect 10 in our testing, thanks to a combination of high-tech sensors, including cameras, a structured lighting system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot we tested that can fully autonomously refill and empty its base station and it boasts its own self-cleaning mop pads.
The X40 is, like the other iRobot products, is simple to operate. It comes with a simple mobile application interface, and it integrates with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only downside is that the X40 still a loud unit. This can be a concern in the mornings prior to work or at night when you're trying to sleep.
It's also a bit expensive but not as much as the Ecovacs MaxV Ultra or the Roborock S8 Omni, which are equally powerful and more attractive. If you're willing to live with a little more noise and some additional cost, this is a very powerful two-in-one that will please almost everyone.
iRobot L20 Ultra
The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with a lot of advanced features that let you get rid of your chores. Like Ecovacs' range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-off cleaning machine that takes care of both mopping and vacuuming, with a multifunction dock that automatically empty the vacuum's trash bin, refills its water tank, washes and dries its mop pads.
The smart robot makes use of an array of LIDAR and structured light to draw out floor plans and identify obstacles, and navigates more effectively than its top rivals. It also has a front mounted camera for real-time detection of hazards but this wasn't foolproof in our tests and was often confused with power cords or obstructions.

The RX3 is more advanced than its price suggests. It's a pro at vacuuming, picking up 55% of the debris we found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using a single pad that uses a reciprocating motion, which cleans better than most of the other robot mop cleaners we've tested. It's also self-sufficient, with a full-featured application and a self-emptying, washable base.
The iRobot application is designed to guide you through the mapping process, which gathers information on your floorplan, as well as any "no go" areas that you have marked on the map. It can be used to design cleaning schedules or organize the spot-cleaning. It can also be used to it to rank your most filthy areas for better performance.
