It's therefore prone to get stuck on shoes and socks, and it couldn't navigate through rooms with a lot of people well in our tests. It also doesn't come with an image sensor that lets it see the corners of the room.

However, it's a good choice to consider, particularly if you're looking to save money on a iRobot Roomba and you have a mostly unfinished home or office. Additionally, it's quiet and can work while you're at work or school. The only thing it lacks that you don't get in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on floors that aren't clean. And it's less effective at mopping, using disposable wet wipes, which don't stick on well and aren't able to handle dried-on debris. The Q5 does have a self-emptying dock, though. If you're required to, the mopping pad can be swapped for an awe-inspiring one in a matter of seconds.

2. IRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact, sleek vacuum cleaner that also has the ability to sweep floors. Its quick navigation and smart cleaning maps make it simple to clean and effective at taking on larger particles, such as pet hair. It also has a powerful suction and an automatic hoover bin for emptying. It's the best robot hoover for carpets, but it lags behind some competitors in deep cleaning.

This high-performance vacuum and mops utilizes sensor technology that can avoid obstacles and pet waste. It's more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but offers superior suction and an onboard bin that is automatically empty into the base. It also supports voice commands via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It is able to clean floors even after it vacuums. This is a feature we haven't seen in other robotic vacuum/mop combinations.

3. iRobot Roomba X40

This mop and vacuum combination has a sleek, circular look that looks more like the regular Roomba model than the bulky units of the competition. It's among our most appealing looking robot vacuums. The latest model from iRobot is also its smartest. It comes with advanced features such as Enhanced Dirt Detection and future compatibility (another company’s robot that can wash mop pads in a self-cleaning manner).

It's the only robotic mop or vacuum that scored a perfect 10 in our evaluations, thanks to a combination of high-tech sensors that include cameras, a structured light system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot we tested that can fully autonomously refill and empty its base station and it has an its own self-cleaning mop pads.

As with other iRobot models, the X40 is user-friendly, with an intuitive mobile app interface, and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit as well as Google Assistant. The only downside is that the X40 is still a noisy unit. This can be a problem in mornings prior to work or at night when you're trying to fall asleep.

It's also a bit costly however, not as much as the Ecovacs MaxV Ultra or Roborock S8 Omni, which are both equally capable and better looking. This is a two-in-one vacuum that's very capable, but it's going to cost you more and produce more noise.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with a variety of sophisticated features that let you get rid of your chores. Similar to Ecovacs range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-off cleaning machine that takes charge of both mopping and vacuuming, with a multi-function dock that automatically emptys the vacuum's dust bin, fills its water tank and washes and dry the mop pads.

The smart robot employs an array of LIDAR and structured light to map out floor plans and spot obstacles, and navigates more effectively than its more expensive rivals. It also has a front-mounted camera for real-time hazard detection, although this wasn't quite reliable in our tests and was occasionally confused by power cords or other obstructions.

The vacuum cleaner comes with the capacity to suction up to 7,000 Pascals which is more than sufficient to accomplish the task. It also has "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the intensity at which the vacuum works and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for different areas of your home in accordance with how dirty they tend to be.

For larger houses it's recommended to choose one with spot or zone cleaning modes that allow you to tell the robot vacuum cleaner to clean one particular area of your house using the app or voice commands. If you have a lot of furniture, a stair-mode is also useful. For families with busy schedules, a recharge function and resume feature that permits your robot vacuum to resume where it left off could be very beneficial.

It's also self-sufficient, with a fully-featured app as well as an auto-emptying washable base.

The well-designed iRobot app will guide you through a mapping run that gathers information about your floorplan and any "no-go" areas you have marked on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules, or to organize an automatic spot-clean. You can also use it to prioritize your dirtiest areas for greater efficiency. It also has a less intuitive app and a small base station that doesn't double as an emptying bin.
