Carbon Fiber

Carbon Fiber is extremely strong, yet very light. This makes it the perfect material for a frame for a power wheelchair especially when it's molded to the shape of the user. It is also able to bend to absorb the shock of uneven terrain and provide a smooth ride. Carbon chairs are the lightest powerchair available on the market, with a weight as little as 32 pounds.

This material is constructed of thin filaments made up of atoms of carbon, which are bonded together to form a crystal structure. The fibers are then woven into sheets or sandwich laminates and infused with resins to create a rigid material that is both strong and light. The resulting material can be used in the production of high-performance parts for aerospace, automotive, and sporting goods applications.

The production of carbon fiber is complicated, and it requires a significant investment in equipment and knowledge. The process begins with a polymeric precursor, that acts as the molecular backbone of carbon-rich carbon fibers. Historically, this was either pitch or rayon. Today, the majority of carbon fibers are made from polyacrylonitrile (PAN) which is derived from the commodity chemicals ammonia and propylene.

Carbon fiber can be shaped into a variety of composite materials. The strength and stiffness of the material can be adjusted by changing the temperature at which it is processed.
