Both the Q5 and the Q7 Max Series get very good scores in our floor tests that test for bare floors and are particularly effective in removing pet hair. There are some issues however, which hinder them from being our first choice. One of the Q5's shortcomings is that its navigation system does not feature AI-powered obstacles avoidance. It's therefore prone to getting stuck on shoes and socks and couldn't navigate through rooms with a lot of people well during our tests. It also doesn't come with cameras that let it see the corners of the room.

Still, it's very good, especially if you want to save money on a iRobot Roomba and you have a bare-floored home or office. It's also very quiet and operates while you are at work or in school. It doesn't have the edge-to-edge floor vacuuming feature that's offered in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective in mopping. It relies on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick well and aren't able to deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 does have a self-emptying dock, though. And, if you need to, you can swap the mopping pad to dry ones in just a few seconds.

2. iRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact, sleek vacuum cleaner that also has the ability to mop floors. Its intelligent cleaning maps as well as nimble navigation make it easy to clean, and efficient in tackling larger particles such as pet hair. It also comes with strong suction and self-emptying bin. It's the best robot hoover for carpets, although it isn't as efficient as some of its competitors in deep cleaning.

Its obstacle detection was excellent, and it avoided fake dog turds, socks, shoes and bundles of cables.

It's a little more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but offers superior suction and an onboard bin that automatically empties into the base. It also supports voice commands through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It is able to clean floors even after it vacuums. This is a feature that we haven't seen before on other robot vacuum/mop combination.

3. Roomba X40 from iRobot

With a sleek circular design that looks like a regular Roomba than the competitors' boxes This mop and robot vacuum is among the most appealing looking in our tests. iRobot’s latest flagship model is also among its most advanced. It comes with advanced features like Enhanced Dirt Detection as well as future compatibility (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads in a self-cleaning manner).

It's the only robot vacuum/mop that scored an exemplary 10/10 in our testing thanks to a blend of high-tech sensors that include cameras, a structured lighting system, and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot in our tests that can fully self-refill and empty its base station, and it has an its own self-cleaning mop pads.

As with other iRobot models, the X40 is user-friendly, with a simple mobile app interface and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant. The only drawback is that it's a noisy unit which could be a problem if you run it in the morning prior to work or at night as you try to fall asleep.

It's also a bit expensive, though it's not as expensive as the Ecovacs Omni or Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra, both of which are similarly capable and better-looking. If you're willing to live with a little more noise and a little more cost it's a capable two-in-one that should please almost everyone.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with a lot of advanced features to help you get rid of your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaning machine that is similar to Ecovacs top-of-the-line X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It has a multifunction dock which automatically empty the vacuum's bin and fills up the water tank, and cleans and dries mop pads.

The smart robot makes use of LIDAR and structured lighting to draw out floor plans and detect obstacles. It is more efficient in its navigation than its premium competitors. It also has a camera mounted on the front for real-time detection of hazards but this was not 100% foolproof during our tests and was occasionally confused by power cords or other obstructions.

The auto vacuum and mop has a suction maximum of 7,000 Pascals, which is more than enough to get the job done. It also comes with "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates how hard the vacuum works and also adjusts the frequency of cleaning robot mop and vacuum for various areas of the house according to how dirty they tend to be.

For larger homes it's recommended to choose a model with spot or zone cleaning modes that allow you to tell the robot to clean a specific area of your home via the app or voice commands. If you have lots of furniture, a stair-mode is also a good option. Additionally the recharge and resume function that allows your robot vacuum to pick up right where it left off is great for busy families.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is a more efficient cleaner than you would imagine from its price. It does a stellar job vacuuming, removing 55% of debris in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using a single pad that uses a reciprocating motion, which does a better job cleaning than the other robot mop cleaners we've tested. And it's highly self-sufficient with a full-featured application and a self-emptying, washable base.

The iRobot app is designed to guide you through a mapping run that collects data on your floorplan as well as any "no go" areas you've marked on the map. You can use it to make cleaning schedules, plan an area for cleaning or to prioritise your dirtiest rooms to improve performance. The app also grants access to a host of features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom maps, and advanced settings for your cleaning.
